Driving-school exams are a rehearsal for the tests at Regitra. Their purpose is to help as many learners as possible pass the state tests on the first attempt. This saves time and money because every retake at Regitra carries a fee.
Driving theory test
The driving theory test, if you attend a driving school, is taken at the school to assess your knowledge. After passing the school’s theory test, you can register for the state driving theory test at Regitra, confident that you are well prepared.
If you study driving theory independently rather than at a driving school, you do not need to take the school’s theory test. Once you have studied the material, you can take the theory test directly at Regitra.
Practical driving test
After completing the mandatory practical lessons at a driving school, you take the school’s practical driving test. Its procedure generally follows the Regitra testing procedure. After the exam,you receive an objective assessment of your readiness for the Regitra test and the mistakes you make. After passing the school’s practical driving test, you must register for the state test at Regitra.

STATE TESTS
Driving theory test at Regitra
The theory test assesses not only your knowledge of the Road Traffic Rules, but also how you would behave in different situations. It examines how a prospective driver would try to avoid collisions and respond to emergencies in real traffic. Because many questions are closely connected with practical road situations, some candidates may find the test very difficult, while others may complete it successfully in only 10–15 minutes.
You may take the Regitra theory test:
— from age 17 if you want to obtain the right to drive category B or A2 vehicles;
— from age 14 if you want to obtain the right to drive category AM vehicles;
— from age 15 if you want to obtain the right to drive category A1 or B1 vehicles;
— from age 19 or 23* if you want to obtain the right to drive category A vehicles.
*This applies after two years of category A2 driving experience and passing the practical test on a category A motorcycle. Tricycles with power exceeding 15 kW may be driven from age 21.

Who needs to take the theory test?
To take a practical driving test in any category at Regitra, except category AM, you must first have passed the theory test.
Prospective category B drivers who want to practise with a family member may do so after passing the theory test.
The theory test is also required if you choose to prepare independently for category A (A1 or A2), B or D. Only after passing the Regitra theory test may you begin practical driving lessons at a driving-school training ground and in town.
Registration for the Regitra theory test and number of questions
You can register for the test by telephone or online atwww.regitra.lt).The theory test is computer-based and contains 30 questions for category B; other categories may have additional questions. You must answer at least 80 per cent correctly.
You have 1 minute for each question, which is enough time to read the question and the answer options carefully. A 30-question test lasts 30 minutes; a 35-question test lasts 35 minutes; and a 40-question test lasts 40 minutes.
Regitra uses its own testing system. Driving-school systems may be very similar, but they are not identical. The state driving theory test costs EUR 10.00, and each retake costs the same if you do not pass on the first attempt. After passing the state theory test, you may take the practical driving test.
Preparing for the theory test independently
Independent preparation differs from a group driving course because you study the theory yourself and do not have to attend theory classes. You may take the practical driving test only after completing the prescribed practical course at a driving school. After passing the Regitra theory test, you may also practise driving with a family member.
If you postpone practical training at a driving school after passing the theory test, remember that the school will check the date on the Regitra certificate. Monitor how long the test remains valid: from the date you pass the theory test, you have one year to complete the practical course at a driving school, pass the final school assessment and attempt the Regitra practical test at least once. When the theory-test result expires after one year, you must take the test again.

During the driving test, a candidate must demonstrate control of the vehicle, compliance with road signs, appropriate responses to other road users and hazards, and sound decision-making.
